2024 in Review: Celebrating a Year of Innovation, Growth, and Milestones

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s incredible to reflect on our strides in advancing safety and efficiency for fleets worldwide. Here’s how LightMetrics pushed the boundaries of video telematics this year.

  1. Making it easy to deploy video telematics.
  2. Providing actionable insights, not dumping more videos on fleets.
  3. Putting more power in the hands of the driver.

Innovating for Our Partners (and the Fleets)

A respected industry leader once remarked, “Continue innovating for us – it's great that you understand our challenges and work towards addressing those.” While many believe edge AI features alone guarantee success in video telematics, we've learned it takes much more. Here's how we helped our partners succeed better and faster in 2024:

  • Installation Excellence: Scaling efficiently starts with easy, error-free installation. With self-installation as a focus, our new installer app enables technicians to install a dash camera in under 20 minutes – empowering partners and fleets to scale faster and more reliably.
  • Diagnostics: Imagine predictive diagnostics for cameras! RideView Diagnostics offers complete visibility into camera health with configurable alerts. It empowers fleets to proactively address issues like mounting, obstructions, or SD card errors, ensuring seamless operations as they scale their video telematics business.
  • Sales Enablement: Video telematics insights like industry news, competition analysis, and feature deep dives have always been well received by partners. This inspired us to create a dedicated space - Partner Portal -  a dedicated video telematics insights portal offering resources on positioning, ROI calculation, competition analysis, and best practices. This helps partners adopting RideView find success faster and those using RideView scale better.

Innovating for the Fleets – More about Benefits, Less about Event Videos

With the proliferation of edge AI-powered cameras, fleets face a new challenge – managing thousands of event videos. Consider a fleet with 1000 vehicles generating just four safety events daily – that's 4000 videos to review! Edge AI features are ‘never done.’ There is continuous improvement ongoing to not only ensure optimal accuracy and handle corner cases, but also to make sure that the AI and the UX optimally combine to deliver the promised benefits.

Here is how we’re innovating and making a real difference:

  • Drowsiness 2.0: Most drowsy driving and fatigue detection algorithms are based on eye closure or degree of eye closure. The problem with this approach is that by the time you alert the driver, the driver is nearly asleep. Moving beyond basic eye closure detection, our system analyzes blink patterns and other fatigue indicators to alert drivers before microsleep occurs – a crucial advancement in preventing drowsy driving incidents.
  • Automated Triaging: An industry first, fleets no longer need to spend time ‘watching’ videos. Instead, they can spend time talking to drivers, improving safety and engagement. Automated triaging uses AI to rank the riskiest videos for each driver in a month and creates a curated list of videos in the form of a coaching session. Thus, the fleet has a list of drivers to be coached that is very handily available, with all the talking points and videos curated for them, so more time is spent on driver engagement than sifting through mountains of videos.
  • Enterprise Solutions: 2024 marked significant adoption by enterprise fleets. They particularly value RideView’s configurability and flexibility, which lets them customize the system as per their preferences. This includes groups, hierarchies, driver coaching, reporting, user roles, access control, custom events, and more. Their continuous feedback drives RideView's evolution, creating a virtuous cycle of improvement.

Driver-Centric, Privacy-First Video Telematics

Drivers are the backbone of the commercial vehicle industry – behind every successful fleet are skilled, dedicated drivers. As privacy concerns grow globally, we've  taken a proactive approach to make it central to our design:

  • Privacy in the hands of the drivers: The driver-initiated capture button can activate various privacy modes – from stopping location reporting to controlling camera recording.
  • DMS alerts without recording: Driver-facing cameras often face resistance due to privacy concerns, leading some fleets to opt for road-only cameras. Our solution bridges this gap by enabling real-time driver monitoring without recording footage. This approach provides critical safety alerts, such as drowsy driving warnings, while addressing privacy concerns and avoiding the high costs of replacing cameras later.
  • Blurring Personally Identifiable Information (PII): RideView offers configurable options to blur faces inside the cabin—all faces except the driver, only the driver’s face, or all faces entirely. Additionally, it can blur license plates and faces visible from the road-facing camera to comply with regional privacy regulations, ensuring fleets operate with both safety and discretion.

Looking Ahead

LightMetrics is the only video telematics provider innovating for TSPs and fleets – we will continue to lead the way here.

2025 will be a year of great innovations where it really matters. We will continue to lead with industry-first innovations, tackling the most pressing challenges and delivering outsized benefits. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, customers, and the entire fleet ecosystem for being part of our journey.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a safe and prosperous New Year! Let’s continue driving innovation and safety together in 2025, making roads safer with the power of video telematics. See you next year!
